Through 2026, high school electronic pitch calling stopped at the catcher, who took the call and passed it on. The pitcher was still reading fingers — the part opponents were stealing.
For 2027, NFHS baseball and softball both add the pitcher. Coach-to-pitcher communication and coach-to-catcher communication are permitted, one-way, from the dugout, on defense. The rest of the field is still off limits, and the coach still works from the bench.

Rule 1-6-2 · pitcher and/or catcher
The 2027 rule permits one-way electronic communication from the dugout to the pitcher and/or catcher for the purpose of calling pitches.
NFHS baseball has been the stricter of the two on hardware, having previously ruled a device illegal for being capable of two-way communication even when that capability was muted. A baseball pitch calling system should be one-way by design, not by setting.

The 2027 rule permits one-way electronic communication from the dugout to the pitcher and catcher while the team is on defense.
NFHS framed softball more broadly, referring to defensive strategy and game-management information. A softball pitch calling system is generally being used for more than the pitch itself — coverages, a throw to third, a bunt look.
Varsity is one-way by design. There is no microphone on the field and no path back from the player to the dugout.

State associations adopt NFHS playing rules and may publish their own device policies, so confirm the rule in force for your contest.

The hardware is. A baseball pitch calling system and a softball pitch calling system are the same tablet, Hub, and player devices, running the terminology your staff already uses.
The rules are not identical. Softball has been read more broadly than baseball on what may be sent, and NFHS baseball has taken a stricter line on devices capable of two-way communication. Do not carry an interpretation from one sport into the other.

A program can equip the pitcher, the catcher, or both. Nothing requires you to use two devices.
No, and the published NFHS change does not allow it. Only the pitcher and catcher may receive electronically. Infielders, outfielders, hitters, and runners may not.

No. NFHS has described this kind of rule as permissive. Traditional signs and non-electronic wristband play cards remain legal, and a program that prefers them may keep using them.
